Weightlifting grew from 1946 to 1972 into a competition of strength, technique, and national pride. During this period, European lifters were dominant, breaking records and expanding the popularity of weightlifting globally.
Waldemar Baszanowski (August 15, 1935 – April 29, 2011) was one of weightlifting’s greatest. A two-time Olympic champion and four-time Olympian, he also won five World and six European titles, setting 24 world records. Born in Grudziądz and passing in Warsaw, he later served as president of the European Weightlifting Federation, leaving a legacy both on and off the platform.
